How to Style a Turtleneck Under a Sweater

I am always looking for new ways to style mom-friendly basics. If you read this post, then you know I'm all about the turtleneck. But I've never been brave enough to wear one with a sweater. A number of times I have tried the combination in my wardrobe, only to immediately take it off. It just never looked good. I knew it was a hit or miss thing. But yesterday I had an idea to combine my striped turtleneck with a flowy, lighter knit, boat-neck sweater. And it worked. Hooray, a new momsemble!

So this is what I have found about the turtleneck + sweater combo:
- A striped turtleneck is easiest to style. With a solid colored one, it's too easy to start looking like someone from an awkward family photo. Especially if you wear a printed sweater with it

- The neckline of the sweater is crucial. If it's a crew neck that sits too close to the neck you'll look run into the same problem as above. A v neck is a bad idea too, unless you really want to look like this stud:

- Layers help. The more layers, the less awkward it looks. Put on a blazer, jacket, or coat and it'll instantly help with either of the issues above. Evidence A:

- A turtleneck under a turtleneck sweater is a great combination. And so much coziness.

So what are your thoughts on the turtleneck + sweater combo? Is it just a DIY turtleneck sweater? Is this one of those trends that just isn't cool, even though we're told that it should be cool?

Now to conquer my next styling challenge: a turtleneck under a dress.

Other ways I've styled: striped turtleneck

  4. What a neat idea! You may have been hesitant to try it out, but you're rocking it now. I love that the pink sweater is semi sheer. The stripes are just visible underneath it, which is really cute.

  5. I need a striped turtleneck because of this post! I love how you layered it under a lighter sweater. I've tried layering a simple black turtleneck under sweaters and it just doesn't look right. Thanks for the tips!

  7. Since when I was a little girl I have always loved a turtleneck under a sweater. It is effortlessly chic and keeps you warm. The best way to do layers for Winter, I think. I need a B+W striped turtleneck, badly.

I just recently started my very own first linkup yesterday and I would love for you to join with this beautiful outfit. Thank you. The link is below.

  9. Very good post. A scientiic approach. I am still a bit weary about the stripes showing through the sweater. But other than that, I think you gave a very good lecture. Thanks.
